One of my best fighting buddies during my youth was a guy named Dennis Scanlan. I didn't know he had passed away until I met his son at another funeral in town yesterday. His son is quite cut too and owns a horsefarm in Indiana close to Louisville. Perhaps I will get to the Ky. Derby for once in my life if my health holds up. Right Ricky Scanlan? Have a happy

Carlos, That was the late Frankie Di Marco. Ross went on to KO Vitali Klitschko but then refused good management and decided he couldn't trust anyone except himself and stayed in Oklahome instead of a working in a great boxing gym and he slid into near obscurity with no major paydays. As the late and great Alex Guerrero used to say, "You have to learn to divide before you can multiply." Klitschko knew better and is now a multi-millionaire. Have A Happy

Hello, Tom! I'm glad I came across this site. You gave me some boxing lessons years ago in El Paso at your gym close to the airport and for several months at San Juan just after I finished law school. At the time, Ross Puritty was about 8 fights into his career and was often at the gym when we were, under the guidance of an elderly gentleman with a cane who was training him. Sergio Vela and William Campudoni would also show up to train. I also saw Fernie Morales there, though I'm not sure whether he was still fighting. I just want to thank you for all the lessons you gave me. I've continued to train off and on since then, and the foundation you gave me was excellent. You are awesome! I hope you're doing well. I've read you've been helping David Rodriguez. He's very lucky to be able to benefit from your insight and experience. Best regards, Carlos Escobar

Dustin, Take good care of yourself. We have football season coming up and your Dad and I can meet you and have some fun once you are back home. I am not doing too well what with a hole through my jaw from ONJ disease but that it a trifle compared to the brave duty you and your fellow American soldiers and servicemen of all branches are doing. Keep your nose clean and your guns ready and believe me when I say 'I miss you.' Coach Tom McKay

Super Bowl was only good in the 4th quarter. Ref's just did a number on Cards. Great last drives by both teams. One sour note: Big money came in on the Steeler's during the last few hours leaing up to the game. Still, Vegas, etc., made out to the tune of mega bucks. The spread was covered by the Cards. Some Cardinal fans cleaned up. Vegas knows more than the rest of us by far. Ain't that the way it has always been other than a few and rare losses for them? Don't bet against Vegas too much, you will get burned. Have a Happy

What a wondrous way to end the year. For full results, visit their website. Just seach for Convicted Artist. Be sure and check out Convicted Artist Magazine while you are there and in the art section, go to ethnic art and look at some of the painings of artist Lety McKay. Have a Happy

Tom (Benny Benavidez Wins Gold at Pan-Am Games)
|
Big Congrats to Benny Benavidez of our Jiu Jitsu Gym here in El Paso. This past weekend, Benny went to Los Angeles and took a Gold Medal in the Pam-American Games. Benny is over 45 years of age but I guarantee you, at only 160 pounds, he is an athlete for the ages. Back in his younger days, Benny won state wrestling championships, National Championships and then the wrestling championship of the Pan-Am Games in 1982. He was hot property and was hired by countries in Europe as a wrestler and coach. He coached for many years in Europe and other countries before returning to the United States. To be continued.

Tom (Gold for Benny Urquidez)

Continued from previous post:He has also obtained black belts in many martial arts forms and has become an expert in Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Of all the outstanding athletes in our gym, he can still go with anybody on any day no matter what their weight. For those of you not familar with the PAn-Am Games, they are a prelude to the Olympics. This past weekend, there were athletes from Japan, Korea, Europe, Australia, Mexico, South America and the USA. Some have already been in the Olympics and others are going to get their turn. Most have bodies of steel. It is as the saying goes, "One hell of a big deal." Continued on next post.

Members of the press will meet with him at our gym next week. Contact me if you want more information. Also, just google El Paso Jiu-Jitsu and you can get some low-down on Benny as well as our other coach and gym owner, James Baker.another super stud. If you happen to be in the area, you can watch my classes too. I give some pretty exciting and bang/bang/bang striking and boxing classes. I have also incorporated a few Judo moves off of boxing techniques to help the Jiu-Jitsu athletes stike hard and then surprise their opponenent with the Judo technique, put him on the floor and go for the throat or an arm bar. It worked extremely well in my class today. We had a hummer of a class. Lots of action, some mitts, heavy bag, widow-maker bags, live-like dummy, hook and uppercut combo's, weaving and hooking and hooking in the manner of the old-time great, Henry Armgtrong, and finsihing up with 45 minutes of technique sparring folowed by live sparring and then culminated with some get-down toe-to-toe sparring, nearly every athlete rotating to take on every other athlete. Even 14 and 25 year olds went up against grown men. My 130 pound ace, Nathan Martinez, age 16, and 15 year old, Phillip Benavidez at 150, went head up against men up to 206 pounds. Yes, some parents have criticized me for being too tough on their kids. Others praise me to no end. Today, it was all praise. Even gallery members and parents were awestruck that a man of my age, with broken ribs and cancer plus my wicked and nasty osteo necrosis of the jaw, could carry out such a difficult class that lasted two hours

Yippee! Cliff and I will be at Los Angeles Boxing Gym in El Paso on April seventh for a demo and booksigning, ten in the morning to two in the afternoon (Henry?? not a url??)I was really geared up for my speedbag and widow-maker bag demo but broke some ribs in a fall at my house five days ago. I am in a lot of pain and unable to get much sleep. However, one of my students, Nathan Martinez,is a real ace now and will do the demo in my stead. Nathan is 16 and has so much speed. I think I will nickname him "Mercury." Anyway, we should have a thrilling day. It is at thirty six thirty one (Henry, say's I look like a url with numbers???) Trawood on the eastside. Come and enjoy. Even if your just passing through. Have a Happy

Did any of you catch that Boise State win over Oklahoma in the Fiesta Bowl? Perhaps one of the greatest bowl games of all time if not the greatest. Three improbable dipsy-doodle plays by Boise in the last minutes run to perfection to make OT and to win on a 2 point conversion. It was amazing just to watch. Go WAC. Yeah, no wonder UTEP left the WAC, Boise and some other memebers had their number. They didn't fare much better in a weaker (much weaker) conference. Yikes!! Mike Price needs to get serious with our team and get us in some bowls and maybe, win one. And if it takes a little imagination and some work to do that, why not??? Boise does their thing with flare, confidence and success. We sure ain't having much fun like Boise does. And even if they had lost, they still showed the sports world that they belong at the highest level. Cheers to Bronco Country. Jeers to the BCS for not having a playoff format. At least take the four top bowl winners and go for it.

You have to admit, I know how to stir up the natives. Hahaha. By the way, Sharon is the ex of Randy 'Tex' Cobb. Remember 'Raising Arizona" or 'Uncommon Valor?' 'The Champ with John Voight? How he lost the heavyweight championship fight to Larry Holmes but caused the Mouth (Howard cossell) to quit calling boxing? That's the Cobb. I helped groom him before he went to Philasdelphia. We were roommates for five months. She was his man. She is still after him but for moolah. She is a writer of songs and other material. You have to admit, I know how to stir up the natives. Hahaha. By the way, haron is the ex of Randy 'Tex' Cobb. Have a Happy.I have a pic of him on the website that you posted. I will send more.

I hate to correct you. But you did not list ONE reason why I love you. I love you because you are the bestest friend I have ever had. Because you have a kind and loving heart. and of course, because you will beat me up if I say anything different. ;-) Oh. I left out the part about you being a Mariner. we are all proud of you "legs". hahahaha (inside joke)

My Fellow MVHS graduate and Brother, Hank, really loves me because I am a humanitarian, ecologist, biologist, humanist, constituionalist, more Deist than our founding fathers, George, Thomas, John, etc.,and even though I am now an old fart, I am still a humdinger of a wizard at fighting and teaching fighting. And for a long time, I was a pretty good lover. Hehehehe.

It's been a long time. I learned many things from you, as far as, discipline and what it takes to be a champion. I would love to speak to you again. The first time we met was at the GI, my teachings contd. at AKKA on Montana in El Paso. Would love to hear from you again. You were like the father I never had. Your teachings have endured.

I was at Tom McKay's book signing and exhibition. It really was amazing. Who would ever believe coach McKay is in his seventies? Who would believe he has cancer and other medical problems?

I was at the seminar in Odessa given by Mr. Tom McKay. Coach Tom is a spectacular personality and some kind of boxing coach. I can't believe he is in his 70's and very ill. This man put on the best demonstration of skills I have ever witnessed in an older person. Maybe he should be on the Jay Leno show. I sure want to see Cliff and Tom together. That will be like the fourth of July. I understand that it will happen. I can hardly wait.

I used to live in El Paso. I went to Burgess High School. My husband and I went to nearly all of Cliff's fights. I would love to see a movie about Cliff. But how can you put seven championships in one movie? How big were the Franks and Vizzio fights? Super big, that's the answer.
